We want out to yum cha, also know as dim sum, for lunch today. The tea menu was as big as the food menu. We chose oolong. It was very good. For food we had chicken feet in Chinese herbs, some root vegi stewed salted pork bones, steamed pork ribs, chicken rice wrapped in lotus leaves, rice noodles, pork congee with preserved duck eggs, rice noodle rolls with youtiao, and turnip cakes. We all had our fill of tea and dim sum for less then 93 RMB or about $13. Yum!!
Now for some real Dim Sum
November 15th, 2009Canon PowerShot S90
November 14th, 2009I have had my eye on the little PowerShot S90 for months. I think my friends were starting to get tired of me talking about it. When I got to Hong Kong, I was hoping to get my hands on one. The weekend it was released, my friend Phil and I walked through camera shops all over Kowloon to find one. Every shop was sold out of them. The only place to have one on display was the Canon office in TST and it was at the full MSRP of $3680. I was willing to wait.
Fast forward a few weeks, my friend Clinton, took me to see his photo store buddy, John, in Mongkok. We had called ahead to check on availability and a quote. We asked John to set aside one for me. John threw in a 8GB card, an extra battery, and a carrying case, all for $3400, a little less he quoted on the phone.
Here are some pictures I have taken so far. Kids. Hong Kong. So far I have very little to complain about the little camera. It does just about everything I am looking for.
Beijin Lu in Guangzhou
November 14th, 2009Noticing that everyone’s going to just lounge around for the afternoon, I decided to rally up the troops for a little walk. I did a quick 5 min search online to see where the locals go for some cheap entertainment in Guangzhou.
Beijin Lu is in the center of old town Guangzhou. The thousand year old road has had many names through the centuries. Some of the old layers of the road are preserved and can still be seen. Today the road one of the two major pedestrian streets in the city and is full of traditional and modern fashion shops. You will find 30 year old Chinese desert shops next to KFC and McDs and small clothing stores next to multi-floor department stores.
We took the subway to the area. Since it is Saturday afternoon, the streets are full of people. Of course Dickson had to stop by McD for a happy meal, it’s just got universal appeal to kids. The adults stopped by one of the old local eateries. We all ordered a bowl of roast goose rice noodles (about $2.30 a bowl) for afternoon snack. Very tasty.
We decided to head home around the same time as thousands of others. The subway was packed like rush hour in Tokyo. It was more fun and sitting at home and surf the firewalled internet all day.

Not Giving Face(book)
November 13th, 2009I am in China and I can’t get to Faceb00k or Utube. This is going to be annoying. Must figure out a reliable solution.
NY DMV
September 17th, 2009I called the DMV to change my address on my license. The phone tree was just as bad as some 90′s tech supports. There were way too many initial options to choose from, forcing one to listens all of them. But it really wasn’t too unbearable.
Once I got my address changed, I decided to get a new license while I had someone online. I was promptly transferred to the wrong person/department three time before I gave up.
Maybe this is just the way it is trying to redirect more traffic through its website.
It was still better then most experiences at the CA DMV.
